I never supported UW for precisely the reasons listed in your post. Like you, I keenly felt my employer's "disappointment" at not getting 100% participation. C'est la vie. The UW rep always told me we could designate what agency received our gifts. I never found that compelling.

David, the music, lyrics, etc. are the same regardless of the skill level of the performer. This is just an extreme example.

The first time I saw it performed was during a TV telecast. Granted, it wasn't the most professional of programs, but the cheesy lyrics are going to be there if Elvis himself performed it.

My mom is a big fan of the Bill Gaither and his associates. They certainly are talented singers. But, quite honestly, it all sounds about the same to my ears.

I'm not a fan the genre as a whole, but to each his own. The main point of the post is that this is just a bad song. I would hope you would agree with that. Otherwise, no offense intended to those who happen to be fans of SG!

Your blog entry reminds me of this one:
http://ohthethoughts.wordpress.com/2008/03/19/embarrasing/

As I commented then...
Is it really fair to hold up a rank amateur performing a novelty song as a legitimate reason for disliking Southern Gospel (or any other style of music, for that matter)?

Check out these links:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Dc7sNSNjfE

You may dislike these songs as well, but at least you’ll be disliking professionals who actually made/make a successful living singing Southern Gospel music.

Dude, you stole that idea from me!

In seminary, a bunch of us came up with an idea for an old school Christian rock band: 1611 (Rockin' for Truth). We had a whole host of songs, including:

1) The Angel Stirs the Waters
2) These Three Bear Witness
3) I Don't Know Much (but I Know John 3:16)

And so forth. Don't know why it never took off...

Irenaeus is indeed correct! You win the prize! And your resource is correct as well (both quotes are from the same work).
