More Junk Mail
February 4th, 2008 by tempe
Well, at least this “Christian junk mail” has the potential of being rather tasty. Can you tell what these are photos of (sorry, the first is a little out of focus)?

These are photos of the front and back of a candy bar I recently received in the mail. That’s right: a candy bar (I wonder how much that cost to mail!). It is from the Center for Interfaith Relations, and it is basically an invitation to attend a “Faith Leaders’ Forum” on February 14th (I suspect I might be too busy that day). The front says, “Be Ours on February 14th at the Faith Leaders’ Forum!” The back says, “Ingredients for Faith Leaders’ Forum: Baha’i, Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Indigenism [???], Islam, Jainism, Judaism, Shintoism, Sikhism, Taoism, Zoroastrianism”, along with contact information.
If you go to the CIR’s website, you’ll see their credo:
The Divine is present in all persons and
in their religious traditions.
Isn’t that nice? Somebody’s been talking to Oprah.
I wonder how all these “faiths” will taste when mixed together. Rather diluted, I suspect, and probably not a lot like real chocolate. Can’t we all just get along? I suppose, as long as we really aren’t saying anything special.
I was unaware that “Zoroastrianism” was still around…
I googled it and found a site on religions (for what it’s worth) that estimated Zoroastrianism to have approximately 140,000 adherents today, most in Iran and India. There were estimated to be around 5000 in the U.S. today. Apparently, there are a few in Louisville!
I’m guessing “indigenism” (which spellcheck doesn’t recognize) is fancy/PC for all sorts of paganism. Whatever your ancestors worshipped five thousand years ago is fine with them, apparently. All the better if it isn’t one of the ones already stated in the list–the more inclusive, the better.
I suppose that makes sense, AP. I guess it would be a catch-all/big tent phrase. After all, I was starting to wonder if the Wiccans had been left out…
