Progress at Bonclarken
November 17th, 2007 by tempe
My wife and I traveled to the campgrounds/conference center for our denomination (the Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church) this past week — at the Bonclarken Conference Center, in Flat Rock, NC (I was attended a board meeting for Outreach North America, the home missions board for the ARP). One of the recent projects for Bonclarken is the construction of a new hotel and meeting center. We were able (actually, my wife!) to take a few photos to show the progress of construction, and I have posted them below. Construction is supposed to be finished by next May.

I am really looking forward to going to Bonclarken sometime soon. Looks like a beautiful place.
It is a beautiful place. The only knock of recent has been the lack of nice housing. There is on “hotel-style” building on campus (it is the building on the left in the photos), but it only has two floors and it is beginning to show a little age. Bonclarken has actually lost “business” the past few years because that the only really nice place to stay on the grounds (most of the other buildings are older and dorm style). The new building will be super nice and attract church groups, plus provide extra housing for Synod (when I attend Board meetings, I can stay on campus, but so many people come for Synod, I have to stay at the local Holiday Inn Express).
Imagine: it will be an even more beautiful place after the construction equipment is gone! And if you can make it to Synod in June, make sure you stay for the Erskine luncheon. A local BBQ place in Greenville (SC) caters it: Smoking Stokes BBQ, home of the world famous Cheerwine Sauce!!!
If my second child was not due in June I would definitely plan on being there for Synod. By then I will be an “official” ARP member.
By the way have a Happy Thanksgiving!!!
The building looks great, but does it seem as crowded on the campus as it looks? Or is that just my misperception because of bad memory?
Benjamin: Happy Thanksgiving to you, too, brother!
Trey: There are some depth problems with the 2D pic. The buildings are fairly close, but not nearly as close as they appear because of the perspective (i.e., they are not “right next” to each other).
Bonclarken is just down the road from my home. Our Lions club has had a lecture on Bonclarken, and we have contributed to it, but I have never been there.
There are many camp sites in the Hendersonville area.
Thanks for commenting, Chas. I didn’t realize you were so close when we were down there last week. I thought you lived in the Columbia, SC area.
Oh, well, go Gamecocks! Beat those Clemp-sun Tigers!
